With so many products and slaves being traded, this route was always on the radar of the pirates. The pirate ships were laden with cannons and different kinds of weaponry to attack merchant ships. Contrary to popular perception, pirates would invite the crew of the captured ship to join them and those who declined would be allowed to go free unharmed.

Pirates plundered ships of all nations as they had allegiance to none. The punishment for this crime was hanging on the gallows. During the period 1660 to 1730, the pirates wreaked havoc in the seas with their ruthlessness and opportunistic methods. The new recruits in the gangs of pirates swore an oath of loyalty to the gang. This entitled them to a vote in electing officers for the pirate ship and they would get an equal share of the loots after the captain. They would also be compensated for injuries. This reflects that there was no hierarchical system on pirate ships. The pirates had access to good food and wine as they would fill their stocks with frequent raids on merchant ships.
